What We Do

Rodgers Sales and Service - We are an authorized dealer for Rodgers Instruments of Hillsboro, Oregon. We serve most of the state of Kansas, excluding the eastern edge. Mike Combs started his work with Rodgers as a salesperson for Mid-America Piano, the Rodgers Dealer at the time, nearly 20 years ago. In 2000, Combs Organ Specialists became the Rodgers dealership for this area.

For more information about our Rodgers Installations, links to Rodgers, etc., visit our Rodgers page.

Pipe Organ Tuning and Service - C.O.S. contracts with over 100 churches in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas for the regular tuning and service of their pipe organs. For information regarding pricing, frequently asked tuning questions, etc., visit our pipes page.

Custom Woodworking - By looking at the pictures on the page below, it should be apparent that we take a great deal of pride in how our installations look, in addition to how they sound. This past year, our master carpenter, Dan Miller, came board as a full-time employee. He has been working for us, on a per-project basis, for years. Our business has grown to the point where we now keep him busy building custom casework, windchests, and church furnishings, 5 days a week. Visit our wood page for more information.

Pipe Organ Additions and Rebuilding - Reasons for needing to rebuild an organ can vary. Old pipe organs can have problems with their electrical relay and switching systems causing dead notes, problems with combination actions, etc. They can also have leather that has decayed - causing dead notes, ciphers (notes that always play), wind leaks and air noise, etc. Rebuilding might also be needed to add new stops to an organ. We can help in any of these situations. See our rebuilding page to read more.

Organist Training and Workshops - Much of our organist training happens every time we are at a church. Whether the visit is a scheduled tuning, sales meeting, or we are just dropping by to say "hello", organ talk invariably comes up. Each conversation is an opportunity for us to teach about the inner workings of the organ and learn from the organists we work with as well.

More extensive, formal training happens when we install a new or newly rebuilt organ. Each organist is given ample, hands-on instruction regarding the operation of a new system. In addition, we plan and present workshops periodically to cover more general organ related topics such as registration, and the organ's place in contemporary worship services.

*Quick Tip - Join our Mailing List to stay informed of workshops near you. Also, if you would like to host a workshop at your church, please contact us. We'd love to come.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ellsworth

On September 6, 2009, St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, KS, dedicated their new(old) church organ. St. Paul's original organ was built by Vogelpohl and Spaeth organ builders of New Ulm, Minnesota in 1917. That instrument was replaced by a new Reuter organ in 1949,  retaining the original 1917 organ case and facade pipes.

New Custom Communion Table for East Heights Methodist Church, Wichita, Kansas

East Heights Methodist, Wichita

Why talk to an organ company about building a communion table? Because they had built an extensive speaker enclosure for the church's chapel several years ago, matching new woodwork in style and color with old existing chapel wood paneling and trim, leading Heard to believe they had the skills to build the kind of communion table she envisioned.

Rodgers Trillium 788 pipe / digital combination organ. St. Mary's Catholic Church. Russell, Kansas

St. Mary's Catholic Church, Russell

Looking at these pictures, you might get the idea we like building custom digital / pipe combination organs. Well, you are right.

Actually, we love it! Why? The results are amazing. Just as they are with this instrument, created by interfacing a Rodgers Trillium 788, 2 Manual console with 9 ranks of pipes.

The sound fills the new sanctuary of St. Mary's as if from an instrument many times its size. The beauty of combination organs is achieving so much, even in small spaces, for a fraction of the cost of a new, stand-alone pipe organ.

Colby United Methodist Church

The 12 rank pipe organ at this large and active church always seemed a bit small. One organ consultant even recommended getting rid of it entirely.

We felt a better solution was to create a hybrid digital / pipe combination organ. In Early 2007, we installed a Rodgers Trillium 968 3-Manual organ.

Interfacing the two technologies together has created an instrument with over 100 stops, multiple memory levels, MIDI, and countless other features while still incorporating the original pipes.

Austin pipe organ gets 5 new ranks of pipes and peterson relay system to restore top working condition.

1st United Methodist, Great Bend

The Austin organ at this church is a unique and wonderful example of early 20th century organ building.

To bring the organ back to top working condition, we replaced / rebuilt the electrical relay system while preserving the mechanical and aesthetic integrity of the instrument.

This project featured the construction of custom windchests and the addition of 5 ranks of pipes.

1st Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson

The 75 year old Moller pipe organ at this church was and is in very good condition, having been maintained well through the years.

To serve the congregation even better, 9 ranks of new pipes were added including a new Mixture IV, Festival Trumpet, and an octave extension to create a true 32' pedal reed.

The new organ was dedicated in the Spring of 2006 with a concert given by John Leavitt.

New Trumpet en Chamade added to 26 rank Reuter organ at 1st Presbyterian Church, Salina

1st Presbyterian, Salina

The organ at 1st Presbyterian Church in Salina is NOT a combination organ. Yes we do also work on projects that are strictly pipework.

In this case, Combs Organ Specialists designed, built, and installed the new Trumpet en Chamade which was added to the 26 rank Reuter organ.

On Sunday, September 17, 2006 the new solo rank was first used in worship. Demonstrating its purpose exquisitely, the trumpet led the congregation in majestic renditions of Lift High The Cross and God of Our Fathers.
